5 reasons pregnancy supplement tablets are being avoided!

Ask any doctor, midwife or pharmacist and you will find a common issue pregnant women have is that the pregnancy supplement tablets they have been recommended actually cause them to feel sick.

Reports of nausea or other complications such as constipation or diarrhea are quite common and the daily routine of gagging down these pills can be enough to put doubts in the mind of any mother to be whether it is actually doing more harm than good.

No one questions the benefits that these supplements offer both the mother and her unborn baby however for a lot of women, the difficulties are severe enough to actually prevent them swallowing their prenatal pills altogether, which can of course be problematic.

Here are the 5 main reasons why pregnant women say they avoid taking their pregnancy supplement tablets.

1.     My pregnancy vitamin tablets makes me feel nauseous.
Some women find that their churning stomachs are due to their vitamins rather than simply morning sickness or that their vitamins make the morning sickness worse.

2. I find it hard remembering to take the pregnancy vitamin tablets.
Because they are not enjoyable, it is easy to forget to take prenatal vitamins tablets.

3. I get constipated.
Constipation is typically from the high iron levels in some of these pregnancy vitamin tablets.

4. It is hard to swallow the pregnancy vitamin tablets.
Some prenatal supplements are like giant horse tablets and are just many women complain that they are just very difficult to swallow.

5. I “burp” nasty tastes after taking the prenatal vitamin tablet.
Arrrggghhh….some practitioners even recommend that you crush the tablets but this only makes things worse.

A new gentler alternative is now being recommended.

No need to struggle with those pregnancy supplement tablets anymore,  doctors, midwives and mums are discovering a brand new Australian made pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplement “shake” called MamaCare.

MamaCare mixes easily in water to make a delicious an easily digested, vanilla flavoured shake that is specifically designed for use before, during & after pregnancy (whilst breast feeding). It can also be mixed with your favourite fresh fruit like strawberries or banana to make a nutritious breakfast smoothie.

It is a more natural method of getting those all important pre-natal vitamins and nutrients like iodine, folate and iron in fact MamaCare has 26 vitamins, minerals and nutrients which are important for mum as well as her baby’s healthy development.

Health professionals now have a real alternative to the traditional range of pregnancy supplement tablets they have been recommending.

I cannot swallow prenatal tablets!

Let’s face it.....Eating right all the time isn’t easy……

Even the most health-conscious among us sometimes struggle to get all our vitamins and minerals from food alone especially things like folate which is so important for lowering the risk of your baby developing a Neural Tube Defects such as Spina Bifida.

So we all accept that’s it’s smart to invest in a good prenatal vitamin supplement for at least 2 months before conception right.

Well did you know that a large proportion of the population have trouble swallowing pills, even though in most cases these same people report no trouble swallowing food or beverages…so you are not on your own…

For a lot of women, the difficulty is severe enough that it prevents them from swallowing their prenatal pills altogether, which can be problematic of course.

Reasons why you don’t take prenatal tablets

  1.  Your prenatal vitamin makes you nauseous.
Some women find that their churning stomachs are due to their vitamins rather than morning sickness or that their vitamins make morning sickness worse.

    2.     You can't remember to take the prenatal vitamin.
Because they are not enjoyable, it is easy to forget to take your prenatal vitamins.

    3. You get constipated from your prenatal vitamin.
Constipation is typically from the high iron levels in the vitamins.

    4. It is hard to swallow the prenatal vitamin.
Some prenatal supplements are like giant horse tablets and are just plain hard to swallow.

    5. You “burp” nasty tastes after taking your prenatal vitamin.
Arrrggghhh….some practitioners recommend that you crush the tablets but this only makes things worse.

A Real Alternative Is Now Available!

No need to struggle with tablets anymore, MamaCare is a new Australian made Pharmaceutical grade Nutritional Supplement that easily mixes in water to make a delicious vanilla flavoured shake that is specifically designed for use before, during & after pregnancy (whilst breast feeding).

·       Tamanu Oil

The tamanu tree is commonly found throughout the tropical South Pacific Islands. The seeds yield a thick, dark green oil which has been used by the islanders for many thousands of years for medicinal use on wounds and has gained the attention more recently for amazing ability to help promote new skin tissue, reduce scarring associated with stretch marks and it soothes dry itchy skin. #tamanuoil

·         Stearic acid – is a natural fatty acid providing a soft, pearly & cooling feeling to the skin

The macadamia tree is indigenous to tropical regions of Australia in north-eastern NSW and QLD, and produces a small round nut that is widely popular and delicious to eat. Macadamia oil derived from the macadamia nut contains 22% of the omega-7 (palmitoreic acid) which is vital for delaying skin and cell aging. It has high oxidative stability meaning the use of added preservatives are not necessary. Macadamia oil has a wonderful affinity for the skin. It contains oleic acid which is fantastic for regeneration and moisturising and Phytosterols which are the building blocks of our cell membrane and aids recovery. This oil works in the same way as skin oils giving it great skin penetrating properties. #macadamiaoil

Shea butter is used widely in cosmetics and moisturisers, as it is rich in vitamin A and is superb for treating wrinkles, eczema, sunburn, itching, wound healing, allergies and stretch mark prevention. The moisturisers in shea butter are very close in their molecular structure to the sebum produced naturally in human skin. #shaebutter

It is extracted from the seeds and nuts of the jojoba plant, and is a fantastic carrier oil for the skin as it is so similar in molecular structure to the natural oil produced by the body. It is light and readily absorbed resulting in soft and supple skin. It is able to penetrate deeply into the skin, making it non-greasy with no oil layer left on the skin. It is anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and is amazing for oily skin as it regulates the production of sebum. #jojobaoil

·       Polysorbate-60

Derived from vegetable oils and fats. Helps other ingredients to dissolve in a solvent they normally wouldn’t dissolve in, like dispersing natural oils in a water based solvent, as well as thickening the lotion to a luxurious consistency.

·       Natural Vitamin E

A fat soluble vitamin that is isolated from vegetable oil. It is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and fights free radicals.

·       Glycerine

A sugar-alcohol derived from plants, used for skin hydration. It is hygroscopic (draws moisture to itself).

·       Cetostearyl alcohol

A fatty alcohol derived from plant oil, it functions as an emollient, an emulsifier, and a thickener. It gives smoothness and spreadability in lotions and creams.

·       Glyceryl Stearate

Derived from plant oils, it slows moisture loss from skin by forming a light barrier.

·       Chamomile extract

Excellent calming properties on mind and body. Used on the skin for eczema, wounds, and dry itchy skin. It’s also a great skin regenerator and is high in (a)-bisabolol which promotes healing and tissue regenerating.

·       Aloe Vera

Long recognised for its wound healing, scar reducing and anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces itching, accelerates wound healing, is a superb moisturising agent and is highly penetrating, is naturally hypoallergenic with the same pH as skin.

·       Natural Fragrances

Cedar wood – calms, balances energy, relieves itching

Rosemary – Increases circulation, reduces puffiness and swelling, has a clear refreshing herbal scent

Citrus oils – Promotes feelings of happiness and warmth, supports collagen in the skin, relaxes and detoxes, soothes dry irritated skin

Lavender – Calming, relaxing, combats stress, prevents scarring, antidepressant, balances the skin

Protect your baby from chemicals during pregnancy

Be aware!

Some commonly known and inexpensive commercial skin care brands, while often paraben free and phthalate free are usually loaded with petrochemical ingredients, including mineral oil, petroleum and butylene glycol.

·        Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is any of various odourless, light mixtures of higher alkanes1 from a non-vegetable (mineral) source, particularly a distillate of petroleum. Other names include petroleum jelly, white oil, liquid paraffin, and liquid petroleum. Baby oil is a perfumed mineral oil.
Most often mineral oil is a liquid by-product of the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline and other petroleum products from crude oil, for example petroleum jelly, a substance of relatively low value produced in very large quantities.

·        Parabens

Parabens are a class of widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They are effective in many types of formulas, used for their antibacterial and fungicidal properties. Their effectiveness and low cost make them commonplace in products like shampoos, moisturisers and many others. In individuals with normal skin, parabens for the most part are non-irritating and non-sensitising. They can cause skin irritation such as contact dermatitis and rosacea in people with paraben allergies.

The mainstream cosmetic industry believes that parabens, like most cosmetic ingredients, are safe based on their long term use, safety records, and recent studies. Public interest organisations which raise awareness about cosmetic ingredients believe further research is necessary to determine the safety of parabens.
There are many views about the long term use of parabens, but in general parabens need independently funded further investigations regarding links to breast cancer, estrogenic activity and sun exposure.

·        Phthalates (or phthalate esters)

These are esters (chemical compounds usually derived from a carboxylic acid and an alcohol) and are mainly used as plasticisers (substances added to polymers to increase flexibility, transparency, durability and longevity), however they are also used in just about every major product category such as construction, automotive, household, apparel, toys, packaging, and medicinal materials. Phthalates are used in cosmetic products as emulsifiers, plasticizers, or denaturants. The Phthalate that is most commonly used in cosmetics is Diethyl Phthalate [DEP]. Phthalates have been banned from cosmetics in the European Union.
